At the Oakland Book Festival the lines were surreal, like the lines for an artisanal Portland donut shop or a Portland homeless shelter…
The Judith Butler/Angela Davis was especially mobbed. The unsilent majority seemed to be there more for Butler than Davis. A white crust punk girl asked why everyone was in line. We’re here for Judith Butler, someone volunteered. Judith Butler? Fuck that white hack. She’s a scam…
At the same time as the Butler-Davis talk, there was a talk about disability. The night before, it there’d been no accessibility at the gala event. One of the speakers pulled out before the festival and called on Butler-Davis to boycott. Then it turned out that the disability talk only had one non-professional ASL translator (usually you need at least two) and everything erupted into chaos. It was like that scene out of Memories of Underdevelopment where the entire crowd turned against the panel, demanding the suicide of the bourgeoisie, demanding an end to the charade. The organizer of the book festival showed up and started to talk about how difficult it was for her, how she had to attend to Angela fucking Davis, as if Angela Davis had stringent demands for kombucha-vodka cocktails in her Burning Man tent. People left the event and tried to enter the Butler-Davis talk. It wasn’t handicapped accessible, which made things worse. There were demands that Angela Davis and Judith Butler leave their own talk, and address disability politics, but, for whatever reason, that never happened.
