The “Spiral” Conundrum (Musing on the Horror of Horror)

If y’all would have told me that Samuel B. Jackson and Chris Rock are starring in a film, I would have gone to watch it regardless of its subject matter. That was until I discovered they are in the latest Saw series, Spiral.  As I’ve written before, I don’t “do” horror. I don’t understand the concept of paying my hard-earned money to be scared.  I’m not knocking those who like horror, but it’s not for me.  I’m a black man in Mississippi. If I want a horror thrill, I’ll drive by a police precinct and see if anything happens. And, of course, anytime a police officer is behind me, that is horrifying enough that I don’t need to pay to have artificial terror added to my life. Yet, I’ve been told that Spiral is excellent in all types of ways—acting, plot, comedy, and drama. I’ve also been told that this is Jackson and Rock at their best. Be all of that as it may, ain’t no way in hell I’m paying to be scared. So, feel free to give a brother the Cliff Notes compaction because, unless they release a version in which blood and guts are not everywhere, ya boy won’t be seeing it. But, hey, y’all enjoy!
