Warhol devised art to question whether art was a thing apart from advertising and the advocacy of products. If Warhol had been interested in electoral politics in our age, might he have devised Trump to serve the same purpose of unmasking a great edifice? Is Trump the ultimate “Warholian” politician, revealing–at some kind of historical end point–myths about the balance of powers and the ascendancy of law over corruption that have previously been mislabeled? Art continues to change shape in the aftermath of Warhol’s insights and reimaginings of beauty. So, I hope, will electoral politics be radically transformed, free of the cynicism “Warholian” insight can generate, in the aftermath of Trump.
