“Scratch a liar, you find a thief”: A Biblical Perspective

Bishop William Barber II, black preacher and champion of the poor, MacArthur Fellow, quoted his grandmother as advising this pithy proverb about lying and stealing. The Hebrew and Christian Bibles link lying and violence. President Trump photo-opped himself holding a Bible as he violently removed peaceful Black Lives Matter protesters near the White House.

The President is a renowned liar and is recently revealed as a thief, using the lie that he won the presidential election to steal it. Some of his evangelical Christian supporters have called him a Messiah; others deem him an antichrist. Scripture, famously, can be cited by both parties.  But Bishop Barber’s grandmother offers a handy tool. Scratch the liar for the hidden thief. Deceit is the highway to robbery and violence. The snake in the garden says “you won’t die,” Satan is the father of lies, the accuser of others. Christ says the unforgivable sin is to confuse evil and good, to label the work of God the work of Satan.

I.e., that is, to lie.
